Blogging Tips and Tricks #2
This is the part two post of my blogging tips and tricks. You can read the part one here. I’m not gonna say much and we’re going straight to the tips!
Blogwalking — “I follow you, please follow me back” NO
Blogwalking is really important if you want people to acknowledge your blog. The term “post and wait” for people to come to your blog is not applicable for bloggers who are just starting out on blogging. Always go to people’s blogs, leave a message on their chat box or leave a comment instead if they don’t have one. But I prefer getting a chat box for your blog because it’s just easier to leave your link there and you can also find some other new blogs on people’s chat box. I always do that to blogwalk.
Another thing you need to remember is please do not force a blogger to follow you back. Leaving a message saying you like their blog and you followed them will make the chances of them following you back even higher instead of “I followed you. Do follow back.” I for once never followed people who left a message like that for the sake of wanting me to follow them back. When people leave praises on my blog and that they followed me, I am more inclined to follow them back because they’re really nice for the sweet things they said to me. It’s very psychological, the game of mind, as I would say. And please. Don’t say you followed them when in reality you didn’t. It’s not hard to check.
Navigation system
I mentioned it before in my 5 things that can make me not follow your blog post that not having a navigation/labels/blog archive will make it harder for your blog readers to go back to your older posts. I think I explained everything there.
About page/welcome text
When I go to a blog, I want to see what the author of the blog looks like and his/her basic information such as age, location, and what type of blog that he/she has. When a blog is missing an about page or welcome text, how am I supposed to incorporate and relate the content of their blog to the one who wrote them, you get what I’m saying? Let’s say I read a blog post ranting about his/her studies. I’ll be like “Who are you? How old are you and what are you studying that makes you so stressed out? Where?” and all that kind of stuff. I’m not going to enjoy reading your personal rant post when I don’t even know anything about you.
Followers widget
You know, I’m not keen on putting my followers gadget on my blog for everyone to see how many followers I have. I used to have an image link directing people to the page where they can follow me but I read somewhere that if someone has followed more than 300 blogs, they can’t follow more blogs using the image/text link so they will have to use the followers gadget itself. That is why I have followers gadget on my blog because I know the majority of us have followed hundreds of blogs and I want them to be able to follow my blog as well.
Autoplay songs
I don’t know about you but I always have a song playing on Spotify and going to a blog with a loud autoplay song is not pleasing. I will click X. I don’t suggest putting a song on your blog but if you really want to, get the Billy player because the song will continue to play even if you click other links on the blog. If you already have a good playlist on your blog, might as well let your readers enjoy listening to them until they finish while still being able to click to other posts.
Write what you want to read
This is probably my number one tip in choosing what to write for your blog. I publish posts that I know I would enjoy them if I read them on someone else’s blog. Honestly, boring posts turn me off especially personal type of posts without pictures. You’re telling me about your awesome day? Well I need a heck lot of picture proof for that. You bought makeup and some other cool stuff? Lemme see them, post pictures of them! I don’t want Google images of your new smartphone or liquid lipsticks or that amazing eyeshadow palette you just bought. I want to see pictures that you take by yourself. I want to read posts that make me excited for your future posts because you’re an awesome blogger and you can make boring posts exciting with your writing. You get me? Good. I don’t want hangat-hangat tahi ayam blog with hangat-hangat tahi ayam posts. Nanti followers you pun hangat-hangat tahi ayam je dengan you.
