Drugstore Skincare Routine | Sensitive and Dry Skin

drugstore skincare routineThis is a long overdue drugstore skincare routine that I have been wanting to post for months!

Finding the perfect skincare for my skin has been an adventure. Most of the skincare products I have used in the past were either irritating or doing nothing to help my skin. I then resorted to going back to basic and finding a basic skincare product that does what it should do without claiming to do something extraordinary for my skin which most of the time turns out to be bogus claims.

What drawn me to Simple Skincare is the fact that they are suitable for people with sensitive skin. I have food allergy and my skin is so sensitive towards skincare products. I can’t use facial oils and those aloe vera gel in a tub from Korean companies without getting white bumps all over my face the next day and I definitely can not use harsh products so St. Ives Apricot Scrub is definitely buh-bye.

That one time I tried using serum for a month, it made my skin so dry and I literally scratch my cheeks with my nails because they were so itchy and burning. Other drugstore brands like Biore and Safi Balqis did nothing but irritate my skin afterwards.

I wanted skincare products that don’t irritate at all and so far Simple Kind to Skin line does not do that to my skin.

First step: Remove

I remove my makeup with Garnier Skin Naturals Micellar Cleasing Water (POST). It is perfect for people with sensitive skin as it doesn’t burn my skin at all. Sometimes with makeup removers I usually get those stinging sensation around my nose area and it immediately turns red but it doesn’t happen with this micellar water.

I also use this for when I had a long day and my skin just felt dirty and needed an immediate cleanse before I used my facial wash. I believe you can also use this for toner but I’ve never tried it for that.

Use: for removing makeup, first cleanse before facial wash

Second step: Scrub

If you’re a big fan of St. Ives Apricot Scrub, you might hate this Simple Kind to Skin Smoothing Facial Scrub. It’s not as harsh as Apricot Scrub so it doesn’t give you that super smooth baby skin after using but it’s the only scrub I’ve tried that doesn’t make my face all red. It removes my dead skin all fine for a smooth base for makeup application.

Use: Once a week

Third step: Cleanse

Simple Kind to Skin Moisturising Facial Wash does its job okay. My skin does feel slightly tighter after using this facial wash if I don’t tone and moisturise immediately but that’s just my dry skin talking. However, I do like to try an oil or cream cleanser next.

Use: Twice a day

Fourth step: Mask

The mask and moisturiser I’m using in my skincare routine have been talked about a lot on this blog. The Innisfree Super Volcanic Pore Clay Mask is just perfect to deep cleanse my pores. However, I do not see any changes on the size of my pores. I don’t think pores can be shrunk whatsoever, though.

I don’t get breakouts anymore unless I’ve been touching and picking on my skin with my dirty fingers. If I do have fresh wound from picking on my skin, I will use this mask immediately so I won’t have to deal with scarring and scabs afterwards.

Use: Twice a week

Fifth step: Tone

Simple Kind to Skin Soothing Facial Toner is my current favourite toner because it doesn’t contain alcohol so it’s perfect for my dry skin. If you have dry skin like I do, you should avoid skincare products that contain alcohol as it will leave your skin dry and tight.

Toning is a really important step in your skincare routine. It balances your skin pH level and helps moisturiser to work better.

I’ve only started using toner for almost two months and I can see that my moisturiser works better on top of it.

Use: Twice a day

Sixth step: Moisturise

I talked all about Organic Aid Vitamin E Moisturizing Cream in this post so please check it out for more in depth explanation.

So basically, this moisturiser works well on my dry skin and I can see that my acne scars are getting lighter. It contains natural Vitamin E which we all know is an antioxidant to repair our skin.

Use: Twice a day

Backup

Another moisturiser that I have for backup is the Simple Kind to Skin Hydrating Light Moisturiser that I purchased months before I purchased the one from Organic Aid. Unfortunately, it did not work on my dry patches.

I think people with normal to oily skin can benefit from it than people with dry skin. I was disappointed that it didn’t work for me because I’ve heard so many good reviews about it but dry patches are just the worst thing ever so obviously a light moisturiser will not help at all.

It doesn’t work under makeup unless you have oily skin. Whenever I used this moisturiser under makeup, my base makeup looked dry and my foundation creased on both side of my nose even in air-conditioned room.

Overall:

It’s not easy to find products that work on your skin. I am someone who hates trial and error so I need to do a lot of research and read a lot of reviews before I decide to purchase any products be it skincare or makeup.

I still have acne scarring on my cheeks but I definitely can live with that as long as my skin doesn’t get irritated. I do get redness after getting out of shower or if the weather is warmer than usual (sometimes I get white bumps if it’s too hot) but that usually goes away after half an hour or if I stuck my face under the air-conditioner all day long.

What skincare products are you using now? Does it work well or just so-so?
