Sunday Reset 20 – 07.24

I missed June’s Sunday Reset but I’m back with July’s albeit a week later than it was supposed to go up. Every time I feel bad for not posting I have to remind myself that I have a freelance work that is keeping me busy until November and a gazillion books to read on my Kindle. Blogging is not a chore so I shall do it whenever I want to.

July Highlights

✧ My cousin’s wedding weekend! I went to the solemnisation ceremony on Saturday while my husband brought our kids for an outing with my in laws. The reception was on the next day which we all wore brick orange to match. It was so fun. I love weddings.

I bought a Kindle! Let’s just say that piece of device is my favourite thing as of now.

✧ We went on an impromptu trip to my husband’s hometown. I love it when he does that, provided a 24 hour notice is given so I can pack in peace haha. Celebrated his niece’s birthday and my kids got to play with their cousins. It was fun.

✦ Breakfast dates with my husband after sending the kids to school. Love that we get to sneak in quick dates here and there because he’s super busy these days.

What I read

I read a total of 11 books on my Kindle! I was on month two of reading slump, on my way to the third month when I purchased it after some thoughts. It was the best decision ever! Here are the books I read and ratings:

  1. Hate Mail by Donna Marchetti – 3.5/5
  2. Funny Story by Emily Henry – 5/5
  3. Crossroads by Devney Perry – 5/5
  4. Plotting Summer by Jess Heileman – 4/5
  5. The Ex Vows by Jessica Joyce – 5/5
  6. A Lie for a Lie by Helena Hunting – 3/5
  7. Yours, Unexpectedly by Rachel Lewis – 4/5
  8. With Any Luck by Ashley Poston (novella) – 4/5
  9. Drop, Cover, and Hold On by Jasmine Guillory (novella) – 2/5
  10. Play Along by Liz Tomforde – 4/5
  11. Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez – 5/5

What I watched

  • Since my previous Sunday Reset, I finished Gilmore Girls and Dynasty. I watched a little bit of Suits–figured I need to finish the last few episodes once and for all but failed at doing so because I left it so long ago. Will revisit once I’m done with the show I’m watching this month.
  • Sex & The City. Mr. Big, what the F?

What I Listened

  • Westlife – Something Right.
  • Gracie Abrams – I miss you, I’m sorry (I am very late to the party, I know.)
  • Billie Eilish – BIRDS OF A FEATHER

What I wore

  • Longchamp Le Pliage in black (large, long handle). It’s the perfect bag for me.
  • Apple Watch SE (2nd gen). I gotta be honest here–I only bought this a year ago out of fear of missing out. I only started recently wearing it on a daily basis (more like every other day, LOL) to keep track of my steps.

What I loved

  • You’re probably sick of hearing me say this, but I love my Kindle.
  • Submitted my freelance work and got paid a few days after. It’s the little achievements to keep me going.
  • I’ve been planning weekly on my Good Mondays Paper midyear planner and tracking my finance to the T. I think I might have just found my planner peace.

What’s on the August schedule?

August always hits hard, because it’s the month my dad died. It’s been two years without him.

#InMyKindleEra – All About My Kindle

HOLD UP! YOUR KINDLE HOMEGIRL COMIN’ THRUUUUUU

Hi, hello, how have you been? It’s been a while on this space, mainly because July was the month of deadline for me and also because I finally, finally caved in and got myself a Kindle so I’ve just been reading a lot! YEAAAAY!

I’ve wanted one in a while but my husband always talked me out of it with an argument that I already have an iPad and I can just read on there, you know? And I get it: why spend more money on another small tablet that you can do only one thing on–reading–when you already have a perfectly oiled machine that can handle reading and a bunch of other things?

I get it. I do.

But when you’re struck with a level 100000 pain of migraine from reading eight hours per day for two days straight, it kinda make you not want to read anymore, you know? Hence, the big fall on the number of books I read in April, May, and June. Managed to read only one book because I’m not risking getting another migraine again. It was so bad I had to ice my head to alleviate the pain. It’s the only temporary solution that worked. Paracetamol? Naproxen? Caffox? Tried them all, didn’t work.

A friend of mine, Najwa, bought a Kindle Basic and the temptation to buy one was out of this world. I had to get it! I went on Shopee–as per usual–and found a shop who sells preloved Kindle. I have surveyed a preloved Kindle since March but nothing fell through. I kinda just forget about it after a while. The reason why I wanted a preloved one was I didn’t want to contribute money to Amazon and I wasn’t sure how I feel about reading on a Kindle. What if I didn’t like it? Then it’d be a waste of money to purchase new.

I got the Kindle Paperwhite 10th Generation in the colour Sage which isn’t the colour I wanted initially but I wanted it asap so it was either this or the Twilight Blue. I went with this green one which turns out pretty with the pink book stickers I purchased. To say I was obsessed with it was an understatement. It got me out of a reading slump. I’m on my 11th book in just three weeks. How crazy is that? And the best thing is I can read as much as I want in a day and I won’t get headache. That alone is reason enough to get a Kindle if you’re a reader. It’s such an amazing device. I will be using this Kindle for as long as it can live.

Her Little Loves 22

Hello, hi! It’s been a while since my last post, phew. I have been quite busy this month with my other hobbies. Yes, you read that right. June for me is the month of rekindling relationship with my other hobbies that I might have shoved to the back of my long-winded hobby list. July isn’t going to be any better for me because I need to focus on my freelance work and that will take the highest priority for the time being.

Nonetheless, here’s a collection of all the little things I’m fond of, at the moment:

01. I finally, finally, finally, was able to fix my Bloglovin’ link! I know that not many people use Bloglovin’ these days, but it’s still kinda nice to have available should any of my readers would like to follow me there. I can say that their customer service is the worst. I tried contacting them early last year but my ticket was left unsolved. I contacted them again in April, and after two whole months of emailing back and forth, they finally fix the whole link and redirecting feeds thingamajig.

02. I am obsessed with scones and strawberry jam. I went to Cameron Highlands a few weeks ago and tasted some of the best scones available. I wish to learn how to make it one day.

03. I must say that I love digital planners from Good Mondays Paper, and couldn’t wait to start planning in my 2024-25 Portrait Midyear Planner!

04. Pinterest is something in my to-do list that I wanted to tackle, so I took a few days reorganising and pinning my blog posts there. I can say that I’m starting to see some growth (6000 impressions a month!) and it’s just fun saving some cute stuff there. Check out my Pinterest here.

05. My parents-in-law are building their new house, so I’m quite stoked to decorate our new bathroom, closet room, and bedroom there! Eeek so exciting!

06. Since my son threw my coaster on the floor (and thus of course resulted in its crashing to pieces), I got three new ones that I’m in love with! They are so cute and I don’t regret getting three of them.

07. You can call me a freelance educational writer now because this gal right here got an opportunity to work on some educational writings. July will be me focusing all about it as I have a strict deadline.

08. I started watching TV series on a daily basis (again) and managed to finish Gilmore Girls and right now I’m currently trying to finish Dynasty (reboot). I’m around 6 episodes away!

09. Well, I’m done trying to fix my dying right AirPods so I bought a new headphones! Love it to bits, it lasts me a week before I have to charge it. Major love.

10. A few weeks ago I was accompanying my daughter colouring in her colouring book, and I thought well this is quite therapeutic so I got myself an adult colouring book and a 120 pencil colour set. And no, I will not be sharing it with her, haha.

11. EURO 2024 is currently ongoing and I’m rooting for Denmark! Not so much for them to win because I know there are far greater teams contending, but I just love the country so much.

12. My desk setup! My desk is my happy place, and while I have done one two years ago, maybe an updated one is in order?

13. Your gal is finally making her own coffee instead of getting takeouts. It’s saving me RM20 so far as I’ve made it twice in 24 hours. LOL.

Sunday Reset 19 – 05.24

Albeit being a monthly-frequent series on my blog, I feel like the time in between each Sunday Reset is momentary as I scanned through my planner for my schedule this month. May was relaxing and although not much was happening, I am quite happy for the slowness that it brought to my life. I feel happier and clearer for what’s to come in June.

May Highlights

✧ We went to five open houses the first two weeks of May as we are still in Eid season. It was fun and the food was all good.

✦ My kids’ school held a potluck for Teacher’s Day, so I ordered creampuff and churros from my cousin sister’s food business.

✧ The school held a Fun Run Carnival at 99 Wonderland Park. My mom and sister came along with us. After that, we went to the newly-opened The Exchange TRX where we had lunch at Madam Kwan’s.

✦ My cousin brother just had a baby, so I paid them a visit.

✧ We’ve been eating out a lot, and a notable one where we went to the Alamanda Mall for dinner and ice-cream afterwards.

How I Overcome Excessive Consumerism

What I read

  • I’ve only managed to read 1 book which is quite disappointing. It’s very hard to get back into reading once you’ve been away from it for a while. Hoping that I’d get my mojo again this month.

What I watched

  • I watched a Korean movie called Unlocked. It was a 3 stars for me. Brilliant ideas but very poor execution. If you watched a lot of police tv dramas, you’d understand my point.
  • It’s the new season of Bridgerton! It’s awesome as always but sucks that they’re expecting us to wait a month for the second part? Mm, hello police, I need to report a crime.
  • I started Outlander last week and my goodness it was good. A period piece with Scottish accent? Sign me right up! #JamieFraser.

What I listened

  • LFO – I Don’t Wanna Kiss You Goodnight. I love me a good boyband and accidentally finding this gem on YouTube? Yes please. I need more.
  • Isaiah Firebrace – What Happened To Us and It’s Gotta Be You. Love, love, love!

What I wore

  • My new phone case and charm. Read all the deets here!
  • Black abaya from my mom. It’s the first thing I reach to when I need to run quick errands. So easy to put on!

What I loved

  • When it comes to planning, I’ve always been a monthly/weekly girl – I don’t have a super busy day to make daily planning worth it. However, recently I tried daily planning for a few days and perfected it as I went and my god it’s a game changer for me. I don’t know how to weekly plan anymore. Daily planning is the best, even when you don’t have anything to do much.

What’s on the June schedule?

✧ I have a second cousin’s wedding to attend.

✦ BBQ night with my mom’s side of the family.

✧ We’re going to Cameron Highlands with my in-laws so that’s exciting.

Upcoming posts

✧ I’m doing a no-buy month challenge this month so maybe I can write about it after I’m done?

✦ I’ve been wanting to do a where to get WordPress themes post for quite a while, fingers crossed I manage to do so asap.

✧ My updated skincare routine and my quick makeup routine.

How I Overcome Excessive Consumerism

Overcoming excessive consumerism is a long work in progress for myself, particularly as I am a certified shopaholic for as long as I can remember. Not in the sense of buying thousand-ringgit worth of branded products, per se, but small, I-think-I-need-this-in-my-life things that once accumulated could serve a down payment for a car. (Looking at you, digital and physical stationeries.)

Here’s what I do to start overcoming excessive consumerism:

Buying skincare and fragrances from local companies and stocking up on backups during sale

I revamped my skincare routine to only using products based locally as much as possible. Why is this important, you might say? Because I can get them at the store within a ten-minute drive, and not having to purchase them from overseas stores where shipping and packaging are involved.

I also stock up on backups during sale where I can get two products at a price for 1. Not only do I own backups for cheap, I can also stop endless searching for new products to try because I don’t need them.

Another thing that I source locally is fragrances. Now, I love my Elie Saab Girl of Now and Burberry Blush, but they are not local, which, cost at least RM300 to purchase and while I shall treat myself with expensive fragrances once in a while, I opt to using fragrances from a local brand that is high quality and 95% similar to the original ones for my everyday use.

My husband and I are a big fragrance fan (especially him), and he approved of this brand and has accumulated quite a number of bottles. Besides, I can spray as much as I want without feeling like I’m throwing money away. And here’s the thing – I get more compliments using this brand than my expensive ones.

Not hoarding on drugstore makeup and only using and buying what I need

Another thing that I was guilty of is hoarding drugstore makeup just because they are cheap and easily accessible. I have downsized my makeup collection a few years ago, where I threw away old products and the ones which did not work for me (the still good ones have been passed to my sister.)

Now, I’m quite happy with just 1 primer, 3 liquid foundations, 2 blushes, 1 highlighter and contour duo palette and 1 bronzer collection. All of them work for me and my skin tone so I don’t see the need to accumulate more than this. Makeup right now is rather expensive, and I would rather spend my money on something else.

Doing my reading on iPad and less buying physical books

Reading on screen is not everyone’s cup of tea and I totally get it. I have an iPad and that multipurpose of a powerful device is being used to the T by me. Reading, planning, streaming content, showing recipes when I’m cooking – you name it – I do it on the iPad.

I do my reading on the iPad just by using the Books app on it. I can easily purchase and download books for free as I don’t intend on buying a lot of physical books due to its crazy pricing (on average RM60 per book here in Malaysia – cost the same as my monthly electricity bills) and limited spacing to store them in my home.

Limiting myself to five pairs of clothing purchase per year

This might seem a little bit unfair because my mom and I are of the same size, so she passes a lot of her attires to me. From hijabs, abayas, baju kurung, shoes, blouses, and pants. She is a retiree and doesn’t go out much so whatever she passes to me is practically new. Whatever both of us doesn’t want, we will donate it to the cleaning workers in my apartment building.

Hence, I limit my clothing purchase to at most five pairs per year because I don’t need them. Since I’m not working an office job, I don’t need to purchase office attire and that saves me money as well. I try to be mindful and only purchase what I would and could wear at every occasion to avoid not having much use of them in the future.

Keeping things in cart for as long as possible

I have this habit of finding things that would look cute on my desk, and that is not okay because I would end up not loving them and stashing them in a box somewhere in my home. So whenever I get an itch to purchase something cute, I will just leave them in the cart for as long as possible.

If there were frequent occurrence in which I thought to myself, “okay, it would be great to have this on my desk now” – like this desk lamp that I ended up purchasing after a month – then I can proceed with the purchase. It saves me a lot of money as I no longer buy on impulse. Right now in my cart is a coaster for my desk. My son smashed my two-month-old clay coaster a few weeks ago so my husband wants to get me a new one.

Holding off on product upgrade

There really is absolutely no reason for regular consumers to upgrade their phone once a new model is released and I stand firm on what I said. If it’s still working, then why bother spending all that hard earned money especially on something so expensive that you already have, just older version.

I get wanting the new features and all, but I gotta admit, as a loyal Apple customer of almost 15 years, they don’t come out with new features every year anyway. I’m quite happy with every device I own and I hope they live a long, happy life for as many years as they can.

Unsubscribing to retail newsletters

The amount of time I got sucked into being nosey of the latest products by retailers I (unwillingly) subscribed to is copious – borderline repulsive. They are sending me emails every three days of the latest bags and shoes and planners and promotions they have going on and I just do not want that anymore.

So I start unsubscribing once new emails roll in, and haven’t been happier since. Okay – maybe not to all retailers, I still keep a few that I love, but you get the gist.

And lastly, being grateful for what I already have

I think this is the hardest bit for some of us. To be grateful for what we already own because human nature is wanting to own the nicest and prettiest things human can get. But we need to take a second and reflect that there are people out there who aren’t as blessed as we are.

We are always wanting more materialistic things but some of us out there don’t even have basic necessities accessible to them. As simple as water dispenser and electricity with a flick of a switch. As basic as roof above the head and mattress on a bed. As convenient as ordering food on the phone or microwave to reheat leftovers.

I’m saying this to myself as well because I am guilty of wanting more materialistic things that money can get me. But I want to be better in the future. I’m not saying that I will completely change and never spend my money on trivial things again, but I want to be more mindful, more grateful, and more appreciative of what I already have. And you should, too!

Her Little Loves 21

May has been a slow month for me which isn’t a bad thing at all after a fulfilling April full of open houses and whatnots. I enjoyed the freeing weekends, particularly when we can just spend the day at home (as if I hadn’t been home all week but hey, I’m a homebody) without having to go anywhere. There are a lot of things I can do at home, and the great thing is it’s not draining my social bar – think of it as having a 60% battery health of an iPhone, doesn’t last long and need service pronto.

Nonetheless, here’s a collection of all the little things I’m fond of, at the moment:

01. Wild blueberries bagels and cream cheese from Apacaba Coffee, a coffee shop near my house. It’s scrumptious and I’m salivating just thinking about it.

02. Spending time with my mom. We’d usually have a sleepover (or five) at her house on weekdays and go café-hunting after my kids are off to school.

03. Grace and Glow Brightening Solution Body Wash for my AM shower routine. It smells heavily and the best thing is the ingredient – you can’t go wrong with niacinamide.

04. A good foundation day, with the help of my trusty Studio Fix Fluid Foundation from MAC. I know that some of us are still boycotting, but I don’t know what I’m going to do when I ran out of it. No drugstore ones are up to par.

05. The sweater weather. I love that it’s sunny in the morning that my laundry is getting appropriate sun, and cloudy in the afternoon that it’s a bit colder at night. Just perfect.

06. Reading a book that scratches the itch is amazing. Right now I’m reading Funny Story by Emily Henry. I know that I haven’t been the best reader for the past seven weeks, but I would like to get back to it by finding more books on TikTok because why not?

07. Japanese steam rice, chawanmushi, and asari miso soup from Kami Sushi. A great combo for that ultimate comfort food.

08. My blogging consistency! I have been steadily publishing two new posts every week this month, and I’ll gladly share you my secret – the Notion blog planner. Yup. It’s so easy to plan posts, and even easier because I have almost 500 of blog post ideas stored there.

09. I love finding new old music. It just makes me so happy and giddy inside.

10. I woke up one morning to multiple comments complimenting my blog theme which warms my heart. The theme I have is called Barton from EmPress Themes, and dare I say that it’s the best theme I’ve ever used and boy I have used a lot in the past.

11. Surprise, surprise! I went back to my iPad Air for digital planning with a planner from Dash Planner. I mean, writing with a physical pen on paper is top notch, but the ease of digital planning is out of this world.

12. I’m trying to develop a healthier eating habit, so I opt to start simple with changing my daily breakfast menu to a simple runny, soft-boiled eggs. They keep me full for three hours.

13. UEFA Euro 2024 is starting in about a fortnight and a half, and I’m flippin’ excited!

14. Manchester United won the FA Cup! Dare I say that I was not expecting that result, but happy nonetheless!
